Although his debut solo album, Money In the Pocket, was mostly in hard bop mode, the release The Rise & Fall of the Third Stream saw Zawinul exercise his grounding in classical music, making the most of Mississippi-born William S. Fisher's stirring compositions and orchestral arrangements, which form a striking contrast to Zawinul's lively.

Joe Zawinul's "Money in the Pocket" was very much in the style of the tunes that Blue Note was having so much success with — a terse, sly, bluesy melody line, a repeated funky bass line, and a solid backbeat. This was the sort of tune that had to have a groove that was in the pocket and was almost guaranteed to put money in your pocket.

Early recordings by Joe Zawinul as a leader – mostly tracks from the 60s, but issued by Atlantic in the mid 70s to work off Joe's growing fame in Weather Report! The set's got a sound that's a fair bit different than some of the more dynamic work that Joe was doing in the 70s – and many numbers are somewhat mellow, or somewhat modern – played with definite third stream jazz.

Recorded in late , while keyboard player Joe Zawinul was still a member of saxophonist Cannonball Adderley 's band, Money In The Pocket is a remarkable album—remarkable in that gives absolutely no hint of the shape shifts that would transform Zawinul's work a few years later.

Jun 29,  · This album is so good. Highly recommended if you like intensely moody jazz combined with a hint of the avant-garde. You can stream the whole thing for free at Bandcamp if you want to check it out before buying.
