   The clarity of the recording and the singing is pure as the driven snow, with no distortion or compression, and while "Backwater Blues" doesn't quite match "Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee At Sugar Hill" or the great, raw "Live At The Penelope Café" album for pure grit, it has more than enough highlights to make it worth your while/5(10).

   truesmasherdilkreeredshade.xyzinfo The title is a misnomer, but the album does include all of the Piedmont bluesman's recordings for Okeh/Columbia in and A finer collection of pre-World War II country blues is not likely to be found anywhere; McGhee was a master at his craft, and the songs here are expressive, masterfully performed, and rhythmically upbeat in the best Piedmont tradition.5/5(1).

   If you need to have one Sonny Terry/Brownie McGhee album in your collection this is the one. Bought this in the seventies and wore it out. This is a great sample of their work. Sonny Terry is an amazing Harmonica player and Brownie McGhee's solid guitar playing and vocals anchors the work. I you like this genre of music you should love this/5(60).

   Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry recorded a handful of albums for the Folkways label in the 's, out of which was collected an excellent CD compilation called The Folkways Years. This complete album was made in November and is typical of what they were doing at this time. By typical I don't mean average, but very good/5(6).
